Rewilding

The Land

The estate unfolds gradually, moving from secret wooded valleys and wetland through pasture and up onto open moor. Much of it remains unseen from roads or neighbouring land, creating a strong sense of privacy and immersion once you arrive.

This variety of terrain supports a wide range of habitats and gives the land its distinctive character. Walking here is as much about noticing subtle changes as it is about distance or destination.

Rewilding

Rewilding at Hamatethy is about stepping back and allowing natural processes to take the lead. Rather than managing for appearance or short-term outcomes, the focus is on restoring biodiversity, abundance and resilience over time.

The aim is a landscape that can adapt to change, support wildlife, and continue to produce food in a way that works with nature.

Exciting changes have started. Small mammal populations have increased and Barn Owls are now breeding in several places. Otters and Herons are frequently seen in the Beaver woods and a Goshawk is often spotted at Hamatethy.

Wetlands

The changes brought by Beavers are miraculous. What was once a small moorland stream through a wooded valley is now a magical wetland ecosystem. Dams and channels have slowed the water, creating ponds, marshes and edges that support a rich variety of life.

Birds, insects, amphibians and mammals have returned in remarkable numbers, and the valley continues to evolve with each season.

Beavers are the guardians of water. Water is the cradle of life.

Farming

Alongside rewilding, the estate follows a Wilder Farming approach. Grazing animals live outdoors year round, performing their ecological roles while contributing to soil health and habitat diversity.

This approach supports both wildlife and food production, resulting in high quality beef, venison, pork and fruit produced as part of a natural, working landscape.

Habitats

The variety of habitats across the land supports a wide range of species throughout the year.

Through the year

The land at Hamatethy changes constantly through the seasons. Spring brings birdsong, new growth and young animals. Summer offers long evenings and full wetlands alive with movement.

Autumn reveals rich colours and shifting light, while winter slows everything down, creating space for stillness, reflection and quiet observation.

Revitalise

Guests are not expected to study or analyse the land at Hamatethy. Instead, they are invited to relax, notice and experience it in their own way, whether through a guided walk, quiet time outdoors or simple moments of observation.

For many, it is these unplanned encounters that stay with them long after they leave.
